16 Celebs You Didn’t Know Were Vegan

Veganism has been all the rage, lately. More and more celebrities claim to swear by this diet, and Hollywood is full of both veteran-vegans, as well as relatively new ones. Here are 16 celebrities you didn’t know were vegan.

16. Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres

Portia and Ellen are not only married to one another, but also stopped consuming meat and dairy products together in 2009. Both have made statements that going vegan is not a sacrifice, but rather the compassionate thing to do. You go, girls.

15. Jennifer Lopez

Similar to Beyoncé and Jay Z, Jennifer Lopez also did the 22-day vegan challenge. Since then, she added fish to her diet, but said that mainly eating a plant-based diet has helped her feel and look better than she’s ever felt before.

14. Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman was so committed to her veganism, that she went to the Huffington Post to explain why she made the change from being a vegetarian, to a vegan. For her, she was influenced most by Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals, which reveals just how animals are raised, killed, and processed to become food on our plates.

13. Lea Michele

After moving to the West Coast for her role on Glee, Lea decided to go vegan, as well. For her, the decision was about living a healthy lifestyle with better awareness of the foods she eats, resulting in “being good to your body and the planet.” She is no longer a strict vegan, but does try to incorporate as much plant-based food into her diet as possible.

12. Kate and Rooney Mara

Not only are the Mara sisters strict vegans, but they also completely avoid gluten, as well. Both sisters support eating lots of fruits and veggies. For example, Kate never goes a day without a three-ingredient green smoothie. We want some!

11. Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain was a vegetarian for 15 years, and then told PETA that she made the switch to veganism in 2007. Since becoming a vegan, Jessica said that she never has to worry about feeling healthy or slim. She’s known for traveling with her own vegan meals to make things easier when she’s on the run, and she recently bought her mother (who is a vegan chef) her own food truck.

10. Jay Z and Beyonce

While this pair are not really vegans, we have to give Beyoncé and Jay Z some credit for creating popularity around this lifestyle. The couple took a 22-day vegan challenge in 2013, that was designed by their trainer. Beyonce occasionally resorts back to it, which just proves how much faith the singer has in the diet, especially for her vegan meal delivery service.

9. Emily Deschanel

Like a majority of vegans, it was the film “Diet For a New America” that helped Emily make the decision to go vegan — but that was over 20 years ago! Emily’s sister, Zooey, who is also an actress, too, made the transition to veganism, but later stopped, due to food sensitivities.

8. Ellen Page

Similar to her good friend, Kate Mara, Ellen Page is also committed to a vegan lifestyle. She is open about her beliefs, and often speaks out on Facebook and Twitter to inform the masses about factory farming. In 2014, PETA dubbed her the sexiest vegan/vegetarian celebrity of the year. Go Ellen!

7. Jared Leto

Along with Ellen Page, Jared Leto also has been considered PETA’s sexiest strict vegan diet for keeping him healthy and looking waaaaay younger than his age of 43! Veganism is known to keep you looking young and healthy.

6. Ariana Grande

In 2013, singer Ariana Grande tweeted the announcement of her switch to a vegan diet. In many interviews, Ariana explained that the switch equally had to do with her health, as her adoration of animals. For her it is health, and well as compassion-driven.

5. Michelle Pfeiffer

Michelle Pfeiffer describes her late switch to the vegan diet (Michelle converted her diet in her 50s). She told CNN she was motivated by her desire to live a long, and disease-free life. So, for her, it’s mostly health-related, like many people who choose to go vegan later in life.

4. Carrie Underwood

After being a vegetarian for more than 10 years, Carrie decided to become a vegan because she was lactose intolerant. Carrie took a short break from the diet while pregnant with her first child, but has returned to a plant-based lifestyle following her pregnancy.

3. Jenna Dewan-Tatum

Despite her husband, Channing’s love of barbecue, Jenna Dewan-Tatum is a full-on vegan. Aside from her diet, she also makes a point to choose cruelty-free cosmetics and beauty products. Jenna also was a star in a campaign called “Leave Wildlife Out of Your Wardrobe, which is “urging consumers not to purchase clothing or accessories made from animal skins.”

2. Alicia Silverstone

Alicia is one of the most outspoken vegans in Hollywood. She has a blog, called The Kind Life, and in it, she illustrates the benefits of going vegan while also giving some solid recipes to try out. She has been an animal rights activist for a while now, and also says that going vegan can do amazing things for your health.

1. Ellie Goulding

Similar to many other vegans, Ellie was a vegetarian for a long time, before making the shift away from all animal-based products. Ellie told the magazine, Us Weekly, that she credits veganism in helping her feel healthier, leaner and stronger.
